Affiliate Summit 2008 East: Boston or Foxwoods Resort Casino

We’ve been collecting votes for the past month on the preferred city for Affiliate Summit 2008 East, which will take place next summer, and the city with the most votes was Boston.

New York City took a close second in the voting. So we’ve been collecting proposals from any and all hotels that can accommodate our needs for space and hotel rooms.

Just recently, we had an idea that we wanted to throw by everybody.

Since most folks favored Boston or New York, and Las Vegas is always the runaway favorite for the Affiliate Summit West shows, we wanted to throw out the Foxwoods Resort Casino for consideration.

It’s between Boston and New York, accessible by air, train and car, and it’s got the casino action that affiliate marketers seem to enjoy.

So please take a second and indicate your preferred locale.

What’s the casino like? Is it really nice? Tons of places to hang out? Nice bars to socialize in? Anything around the casino?

  2. Shawn Collins Says:

Brand new place – not even open, yet: http://www.mgmatfoxwoods.com/

I am going to Podcamp Boston (http://www.podcampboston.org) on October 25, I will be happy to give you some feedback on how a big show works in Historic Boston.

PS – If anyone is going please reach out to me, let’s have an affiliate marketing meet-up!

My reluctance about Boston (lived here all my life) is that it shuts down early, 1:30 am.

I don’t think I’ve ever gone to bed before 4am at an Affiliate Summit, and I’m not alone, so that’ll be a bit of a shock.

Otherwise, of course it’s a great city.

From that perspective, NYC or Foxwoods would be better.

Foxwoods is really nice, but there’s nothing outside the resort. It’s in the middle of nowhere.

  5. Bob Chieffo Says:

I LOVE BOSTON!! One of my all time favorite cities. It’s so manageable. So much to do with really easy access. The mass transit “T” is really easy to negotiate. LOTS of really awesome places to go see and do at night.

  6. Vanessa Says:

I would definitely have it in NYC or Boston. Foxwoods is not as easily accessible as it sounds and it’s a hit or miss on a good time. There is nothing else to do outside of the “resort” area at foxwoods. Nothing even close to vegas, boston or nyc. NYC hosts tons of the very big shows, and OMMA, ad tech, etc are not until after september. And I know there will be a massive amount who will want to go to the summit. Boston is historic and a great choice as well, it will also attract a large crowd. 1:30 closings are not cool though.

    NYC or Boston…not foxwoods.

  7. Jason Lancaster Says:

Someday, I hope that this industry “grows up” enough that we no longer select the venue based on what bars we can drink at after the conference.

However, until that day, I hope to see everyone hungover.

Also, what are the chances of a substantially reduced “alumni” rate for former conference attendees? I’ve been to the last two and have every intention of attending all of them for the immediate future. What about a cost break for your fans??

  8. Debi Rabin Says:

Please have pity on the West Coast Affiliate Summit Attendees, we have to fly cross country to get to this event, and yes it’s worth it. However, if we have to spend hours in the car navigating around New England on a weekend (traffic sucks, we already are aware of it) it diminishes our enthusiasm for the event.

I understand wanting to leave the Florida humidity, but neither Foxwoods or Boston will have th level of debauchery necessary for the typical Affiliate Summit attendee. Keep in mind that the Democratic and Republican delegations will be holding their conventions next summer and we don’t want to be anywhere near them.

How does Atlanta strike ya’ll? Great restaurants, bars and a fabulous airport. Easily accessible. Southern hospitality, need I say more?

  9. Shawn Collins Says:

    @Jason -

We provide a deep discount in the price if you register during a conference for the next one.

Also, after the conference, we provide a discount code for the next show to everybody who completes the feedback form.

  10. Scott Jangro Says:

    Who said anything about drinking???

It’s not about getting drunk, it’s about spending time with friends and colleagues.

  11. Shawn Collins Says:

    @Debi -

Boston was selected based on the votes collected last month and this month for eastern cities.

Unfortunately, Atlanta only drew half the votes of Boston.

But we’ll keep asking for preferred cities in the future.

  12. Zac Johnson Says:

    Foxwoods or bust…

  13. Scott Jangro Says:

C’mon out Zac, we’ll meet you at foxwoods any time.

  14. Ben Brewin Says:

Boston got the most votes… Need I say more?

I’ve lived here in Boston all my life and would recommend the Seaport Hotel and Seaport World Trade Center. I’ve attended many events in my home town and it’s the best, and by far the most accommodating. Check it out at http://www.seaportboston.com. There’s plenty of transportation to go see the sites; or, you can just stay put, because Boston’s harborside is beautiful and remarkably interesting — historically and socially. There’s plenty of places to meet and socialize ’til the wee hours of the morning if you so desire (newsflash: when the bars close at 1:30, buy booze at a store).

I’m proud to represent Boston when ASE comes to town. Screw Foxwoods! The people want Boston, the people should get Boston!

  15. Stawn Barber Says:

My heart sank when I heard Foxwoods mentioned – it’s in the middle of nowhere with limited offerings. Sure, you can stay up late and drink and gamble, but what if that’s not what you like to do?

The historic city of Boston is a great place to visit, and there are plenty of activities to choose from. People flying in would not have to rent a car or do additional traveling just to get to the venue.

My vote is absolutely for Boston. Just say “no” to Foxwoods.

  16. JP Sauve Says:

I can’t believe the resort is not in the lead. It’s a beautiful place. Looks like fun.
