After discussing the use of blogs by affiliates, Marty asked about some other ways that affiliates could promote their affiliate links. I touched on PPC arbitrage, loyalty sites, e-mail, data feeds, etc., I said I thought social networks were going to be an emerging type of affiliate in the coming year. Social networks like MySpace.com, LinkedIn and Friendster have become increasingly popular, as they offer a more robust community environment than a discussion forum. Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture) recently implemented tough restrictions on trademark bidding, which will protect the merchants and affiliates. Yahoo is laying down the law to stop competitors from bidding on other's trademarks. This is a practice currently not policed by Google. This is a big plus for legitimate advertisers that were otherwise big spenders with Google AdWords. Then there's the Yahoo! Publisher Network, currently in Beta, which is taking Google head-on for the affiliate real estate currently dominated by Google AdSense. And don't forget the sleeping giant, Microsoft. According to a post at JenSense, MSN has a contextual ad program in the wings, "MSN ContentAds is their contextual advertising program name and a launch date will be sometime in 2006."
